ATHLETICS AT WCCS
At Washington Classical Christian School, athletics aren’t an optional add-on — they are a living expression, woven into the heartbeat of our mission to shape our students in heart, soul, mind, and strength. On the court and on the field, students discover that discipline is a daily choice, perseverance is forged through challenge, and unity is built through shared purpose. We use the world of sport as a training ground where discipline is practiced, teamwork is refined, and perseverance is strengthened. Most importantly, it’s where students learn to reflect Christ — competing with integrity, encouraging others, and carrying biblical character into every arena of life.
We believe sports provide one of the most hands-on environments for spiritual and personal formation. Through every drill, every practice, and every game, our athletes learn to work as one, embrace discipline, persevere through adversity, and pursue excellence with integrity. More than winning records, we cultivate Christ-like competitors: students who learn to lead with humility, support their teammates, and reflect the character of Jesus both on and off the field.

BASKETBALL
Our lower school basketball program invites young athletes into a fast-paced, joy-filled introduction to the sport. Students learn foundational skills—dribbling, passing, shooting, spacing—while also discovering what it means to support their teammates and celebrate each other’s progress. Practices are designed to be engaging and encouraging, helping children develop coordination, confidence, and a love for the game. Most importantly, coaches weave biblical principles into every session, teaching students how effort, patience, and kindness can honor Christ on the court.
As students enter upper school, basketball becomes an opportunity for deeper challenge, growth, and leadership. Athletes are invited to refine their technique, understand game strategy on a higher level, and work together with unity and discipline. Whether running a fast break, responding to a tough call, or fighting through a fourth-quarter press, students learn lessons that reach beyond the gym—courage under pressure, perseverance through adversity, and humility in both victory and defeat. Through Christ-centered coaching and competitive play, our upper school program forms athletes who compete with strength, character, and purpose.

Our Athletic Director, Theodore Moreland, serves with a clear passion: to see young men and women pursue greatness through discipline, teamwork, and a Christ-centered mindset. Coach Moreland believes athletics is more than competition — it is a training ground where biblical principles take root in real time. Whether mentoring an athlete through adversity or celebrating a hard-earned victory, he is committed to shaping students who compete with excellence, lead with humility, and reflect the character of Christ.
Coach Moreland’s highest aim is that every athlete learns to glorify God both in victory and in growth. Under his guidance, our athletes don’t just play the game — they grow through it.
why athletics matter
Athletics at WCCS are more than just games. They’re a platform for teaching humility in victory, grace in defeat, and especially faith, through each and every challenge our students will face.
